Hosea 5:15-6:6 “Hesed” This Hebrew word doesn’t have a direct English equivalent. We typically translate it as “steadfast love” or “mercy”, but it’s so much more than that. Other meanings: unfailing devotion, covenantal relationship, and compassionate action. In Exodus 34:5-7, God uses this word to define himself. Ironically, this moment comes after the golden calf, when Moses pleads with God and God graciously offers another chance (and new tablets). The covenant is renewed BECAUSE God is the steadfast one. In Hosea, God reminds the people that what he desires is that we would be like him (by being faithful to him in the covenant relationship). When we have fallen short, God doesn’t want sacrifices from us (looking at you “rededication” Sunday), but steadfast love (a renewed spirit, redirected to Him alone).
