Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me” Emma Lazarus penned “The New Colossus” to raise funds for the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal. This is supposed to be what the US stands for, isn’t it? But we have fallen short of being the America we proclaim to be. Worse still, as believers we fall short of being the disciples we are called to be. Jesus called to him the weary and heavy laden. He sought out the overlooked and oppressed to give them rest, because his yoke (common image for the Torah/law) is easy and light. How so? Because the yoke of discipleship he calls us to is his radical hospitality and love.
